Kaitrinn informed me the other day that she is ‘done with Kindergarten.’ Apparently, she is bored and ready for First Grade. Silly girl! I told her to enjoy the last two weeks and First Grade will be waiting for her when it’s time. She has really done very well all year at school. She performs at above grade level in all areas and is quite the little bookworm! We have a hard time keeping up with her at times… keeping her challenged. A bored Kaitrinn is not a pretty sight! Lol
I considered posting this all almost 2 weeks ago when it started, but was still in denial. Lol….
I woke up one day with a fever of over 103 and back spasms so strong that I couldn’t even sit up. Hmmm… gee, I think something is wrong here! I was perfectly fine when I went to bed the night before. After a visit to the Dr., it was found that I had a bladder AND kidney infection. He wanted to immediately send me to the hospital for IV fluids and antibiotics because it was so far advanced. When I explained Gavin and Shealyn… and how I would be alone and stressed to the max if in the hospital, he agreed to let me go home as long as I would take an injection and promise to return in 24 hours. I was basically an invalid and stuck in one position on the couch for another 48 hours or so. Louie and Dad took care of the kids and house. Thank God for help! =) the symptoms of the infection were the same as several things you go through anyway soon after childbirth, so I had no idea there was anything wrong until the fever and pain showed up.
I have slowly improved over the past 2 weeks and will return on Wednesday for a follow-up. He’s worried I may actually have kidney stones as well since I’m still having back pain from time to time. Cross your fingers for me!! Passing kidney stones is apparently ranked up there with Gallstone or Childbirth pain… two things I have already gone through and did NOT plan on ever doing again! Lol
Shealyn went for an appt with her Endo on Friday. The appt. itself was an absolute disaster as she suddenly needed a pump site change and spiked to over 450 BG. Considering she shouldn’t really even cross 200, that was bad territory for her. I knew something was wrong when she was throwing down screaming on the floor of the lab because the tech simply wanted to take her blood pressure. Lol…. NOT typical behavior for Shealyn. Give me a finger please.. time for a test! =) After holding her down and fighting with a little body that suddenly seemed to have at least 8 limbs, I got a new site in and an insulin correction quickly brought her back to normal and her happy little self. She couldn’t understand why everyone kept checking on her and asking if things were alright. Poor kid didn’t even know she had lost control…
The GOOD part is that her A1C level results came back today. I was quite impressed to get a call from the Endo on a Sunday evening! A1C basically gives you the average blood glucose reading from the past 3 months. At diagnosis in February, she was a 10.0… not good! Now, she is a 7.7 and he was quite impressed with it. Yahooooooo!! That is a great level for someone her age and especially good for someone so soon after diagnosis.
A big pat on the back to Louie and I if I may do so! Lol We have been very careful with carb counting, weighing her food, giving correction boluses, watching activity level, etc. It’s nice to see something concrete to show our work has been worth it! An A1C near 7 shows good control and means less likely to have other physical complications that Diabetes can lead to.
I can’t believe Gavin is a month old already. As you can tell from other posts, it has been a difficult month in the Hannen household for several reasons, so time really flew by. Gavin has had a battle with gaining weight since birth. He lost much more than what is considered ‘normal’ and was almost hospitalized twice for dehydration. I had to feed him every 2 hours around the clock for over a week and still he gained only a few ounces. I would nurse him, feed him formula in a bottle, and then pump to keep my supply up… wait an hour and repeat. Who needs sleep??
I’m happy to say that he has started to improve and is now almost back up to his birth weight. The Ped. said he would really like to see a larger gain, but since Gavin lost so much initially, he is happy with the amounts at this point. Gavin had his 1 mth check last Thursday and got an otherwise perfect bill of health. He looks great and is generally a very happy baby.
My apologies for not sharing photos! I haven’t had a chance to format or load many but I promise they WILL be coming soon =)
Kaitrinn and I spent time at Urgent Care yesterday. She started complaining about her ear hurting her again and I about lost it. She has had more ear infections in the last 6 months than in the previous 5+ yrs! The Dr. said her ears were actually clear but he suspected Strep Throat instead. Gee…. I would have rather it been another ear infection!! Argh… the culture test confirmed strep and we headed off to get an antibiotic.
Apparently, Gavin is the safest in the house at the moment as it doesn’t really infect children under 2. I wasn’t aware of that but if the Dr. and the nurse line at my peds agree, who am I to argue I guess. Now we just get to keep a close eye on Shealyn as well because she is likely to get it soon. That will really throw her Diabetes for a loop so I’m hoping we can avoid it!
Kaitrinn had a hard time understanding how ‘throat germs’ could make her ears hurt so that of course led to a science lesson at the pharmacy as to how it’s all connected. Lol
Happy Mother’s Day to any moms out there! =)
I got a waffle and bacon breakfast to start the morning and then was presented with a homemade card. Daddy and Kaitrinn worked on it all week. Shealyn and Gavin added their touches yesterday. Apparently, Gavin didn’t care much for having his foot painted blue and pressed to paper. Lol… Louie managed a great photo of the four of them with the self-timer on our camera.
Kaitrinn also gave me a certificate that she made at school. They had to fill in the blanks on a few sentences that were pre-printed. Apparently I’m as pretty as an angel… or an ‘angle’ as Kaitrinn spelled it. Lol! I’m also 6 feet tall and weigh 51 pounds. Did you know I’m so smart that I even know what 100 + 100 is?? Ahhh… the thoughts of a 6 yr old. =)
